Tunisia’s Jaber returned after losing the first group to the Venezuelan Spaniard
Spain’s Garbine Muguruza, the 2017 Wimbledon champion, was eliminated on Friday from the third round of the London Grand Prix after losing to Tunisia’s Anas Jabeur 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Muguruza, currently ranked 12th in the world, adds another disappointment, a few weeks after his painful first-round elimination from Roland Garros.
Jaber, who is ranked 24 in the WTA rankings, had ousted another former Wimbledon champion, American veteran Venus Williams (currently 111), who has crowned five times in the past at this tournament in the second round.
In the round of 16, Jaber will face Poland’s Iga Swetic, the 2020 Roland Garros champion and ranked 9th in the world, who beat Romanian Irina Peugeot (79) in the third round 6-1, 6-0.
“I am very happy, honestly, this is my first time on the main court, it is unbelievable. It is the best day of my tennis career,” said the 26-year-old.
Jabbour’s best Grand Slam result is her quarter-finals at the 2020 Australian Open. She became the first Arab woman to win a WTA title last month, triumphing at the Birmingham Championships on grass in the UK.
