London, July 8 (EFE). – Rishi Sunak, the UK’s economy minister until Tuesday, has been nominated as a candidate to succeed Boris Johnson as Conservative Party leader and prime minister.
Sunak launched his “Ready4Rishi” (Ready for Rishi) campaign on Twitter, which includes a promotional video and a slogan highlighting the need to “restore confidence, rebuild the economy, and reunite the country.”
Johnson announced his resignation on Thursday as leader of his squad, but remains acting chief minister until the “Conservatives” choose his replacement, although many of his followers in religion have asked him to leave before.
In addition to Sunak, former Solicitor General Suila Braverman and Tom Tugendhat, a former soldier now chair of the House of Commons foreign affairs committee, have run so far.
The candidacy of Sunak, 42, is the most prominent one to date, as he has been seen for months as the favorite to eventually succeed Johnson, although his reputation has recently been deteriorating.
His resignation from the presidency of the economy last Tuesday precipitated the downfall of the prime minister, who accused him of lack of “efficiency, seriousness and integrity.”
Sunak resigned minutes after his colleague from Health, Sajid Javid, who replaced him on February 13, 2020 at the Treasury Department, resigned.
Javid, who has already quit that portfolio for the first time, will likely also present himself in the primary that the Conservative Party must hold to find a replacement for Johnson.
The so-called 1922 Committee, which includes the “conservative” parliamentary group, will elect on Monday its new executive director, who will launch the electoral process to determine the new leader.
Raised in the city of Southampton (South English), Rishi Sunak, of the Hindu religion, is the son of Yashvir, who was a doctor, and Usha Sunak, a pharmacist, and the grandson of immigrants from the Indian region of Punjab, who came to the United Kingdom in the 1960s from East Africa.
After a career in the financial sector, he became a deputy in 2015, after which he held the position of Head of Treasury since July 2019.
In addition to his experience in government, Sunak, a huge Star Wars fan, has the advantage, of being elected by the Conservatives, that he was pro-Brexit or Brexit in the 2016 referendum.
