Five New Netflix Movies You Should Add To Your December Watchlist

It’s the time of year we all love to sit down and enjoy a movie whether that be with the kids, family, friends or on your own after a busy day at work, looking to hit deadlines before the office shuts down for Christmas.

As usual, the subscription services will be battling it out for your viewership, and we’re already starting to see some great movies land on Netflix, covering a wealth of genres.

But what are the films you should be adding to your watchlist as the new releases come thick and fast?

Pain Hustlers

With an all-star cast of Emily Blunt, Chris Evans and Andy Garcia, Pain Hustlers tells the story of a high-school dropout, who finds herself in sales for a pharmaceutical company but ends up in a huge criminal conspiracy and the very beginning of the fentanyl crisis in the USA.

It’s a particularly apt movie for the period, with hundreds of thousands of people struggling with fentanyl addiction and requiring drug addiction rehab treatment, and a real reminder of what needs to be done in the country right now.

May December

Set to be a real winter classic, May December stars Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman and revolves around a couple’s marriage being threatened when an actor lands on their porch one day. The actor, played by Portman, is there to learn about their marriage, which is renowned nationally as Moore’s character Mary Kay meets her husband when he was just a minor, but the story runs much deeper than that.

It’s a real-life story that is full of intrigue and will undoubtedly be up for the big awards come the season.

Maestro

Landing just before Christmas, Maestro is another that will certainly be knocking on the door of the Oscars. Starring Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan, the movie is a biopic of Leonard Bernstein’s life, with it already being considered two of the best performances of the year.

Time has done a brilliant piece on Bernstein, which you can read here.

Rebel Moon – Part 1: A Child of Fire

If you’re looking for an all-action Hollywood blockbuster, then the first part of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon will provide you with that. Starring Charlie Hunnam, Anthony Hopkins and Sofia Boutella, the movie centres on a colony on the edge of the galaxy threatened by the tyrannical Regent Balisarius.

A mysterious stranger offers help, in what is a thrilling movie and the first of a franchise, with part two expected to drop in April of next year.

Christmas as Usual

Finally, we’ll end with a Christmas movie. Available now, this comedy is all about a couple looking to navigate the festive season after becoming engaged.

The characters, Thea and Jashan, are of Norweigan and Indian descent respectively, and the movie sees Thea take her fiance home to Norway to visit the family. But can Norwegian and Indian traditions go hand in hand? Well, you can find out in this rather chaotic movie.
