The UK government has said it will deliver 10,000 advanced drones to the Ukrainian military to help it fight Russia.

According to a statement issued by the British government, the UK Defense Secretary, Grant Shapps, announced the arms aid package during a meeting with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, in Kiev, the capital of the Slavic country.

The UK is stepping up its support for Kiev with an aid package worth more than £325 million (€380 million) in the form of next-generation drones, a memo published on Thursday suggests.

The statement also specifies that London, “which will deliver more than 10,000 drones to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, will leverage the UK’s world-leading defense industries to deliver advanced new drone capabilities to Ukraine throughout 2024.”

A large part of the drone package that London will send to Kiev is first-person shooter drones, and another 1,000 for one-way attack drones. The UK will also send military aircraft and reconnaissance drones to Ukraine.

For his part, Shapps stressed that the action taken by London to send advanced weapons to Ukraine will encourage other allies to join in their assistance to Kiev.

The British official also considers that British deliveries helped destroy “nearly 30% of the Russian Black Sea fleet.”

With this shipment, the United Kingdom challenges Russia. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that Western countries supporting Ukraine were becoming part of the conflict and that any arms shipment to Kiev would become a legitimate target for the Russian armed forces.
