The First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and the President of the Republic, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermúdez, wished Pope Francis a “speedy and full recovery” after he was hospitalized with a respiratory infection that required medical treatment for a few days.

Via Twitter, the Supreme Pontiff confirmed the news of his health condition, stressing that he was “affected by the many messages I have received in these hours.

“I thank everyone for their closeness and prayers,” he added.

Speaking from his room, the pope’s spokesman, Matteo Bruni, said in a statement that “His Holiness Pope Francis rested well during the night. The clinical picture is gradually improving and the planned treatments are continuing. This morning, after breakfast, he read some papers and went back to work.”

He claimed that before lunch he went to the chapel in the hospital apartment to pray and attend mass.

On the afternoon of March 29, Pope Francis was taken to the Gemelli Roman Hospital. The test result showed a respiratory infection (excluding COVID-19 infection) requiring a few days of appropriate medical treatment in hospital.

Future appointments with the head of the Catholic Church were cancelled, and the Vatican indicated that Francis would remain in the hospital for several days for treatment.
