Cuba. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermúdez on Sunday endorsed Cuba’s commitment to peace in Colombia, marking the congratulatory message he sent to President-elect Gustavo Petro.
He wrote on his Twitter account, “I congratulate President Gustavo Petro (…) and wish him success in this new phase that begins after the victory that was achieved with great popular support.”
“I agree with Cuba’s commitment to peace in Colombia,” the president added.
After his election, Petro asked Cuba for its support in sponsoring the resumption of peace talks with the guerrilla National Liberation Army (ELN), which had stalled at that time. Cuba played an important role in the peace process with the guerrilla group of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) during the presidency of Juan Manuel Santos.
For his part, the Cuban President has repeatedly reiterated Cuba’s will and commitment to peace in Colombia, where the largest of the Antilles will continue to support initiatives for a negotiated political solution.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parilla attended Gustavo Petro’s inauguration with a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During the meetings he held, the Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs reiterated Cuba’s desire to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation with the new government, and its commitment to peace.
