Madrid, February 19 (European Press) –
February 19 of this year marks the 551st anniversary of the birth in 1473 of Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, who formulated the heliocentric theory: It is the Earth that revolves around the Sun, not the other way around.
Copernicus spent nearly twenty-five years working on developing his model of the universe. At that time it was difficult for scholars to accept it, because it represented a real revolution. His worldview can be summarized in the following selected quotes:
– “First, we must know that the universe is spherical.
“As if sitting on a royal throne, the sun rules the family of planets that revolve around it.”
– “Knowing that we know what we know, and knowing that we do not know what we do not know; This is true knowledge.”
“The universe was shaped for us by a very good and orderly Creator.”
– “The sky of the fixed stars is the highest that can be seen.”
“I don't like my own opinions so much that I ignore what others might think of them.”
– “The things I say now may be dark, but they will become clear in their right place.
“The movement of the Earth alone is sufficient to explain many of the apparent variations in the sky.”
