Rosaura Ruiz Gutierrez: Conahsett becomes the Secretariat of Sciences, Humanities, Technology and Innovation
President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo confirmed the creation of the Secretariat of Sciences, Humanities, Technology and Innovation, a new entity that will be headed by Rosaura Ruiz Gutierrez. This announcement, made last Thursday, includes the transformation of the National Council for Humanities, Science and Technology (Conahcyt) into this new secretariat, underscoring the future government’s commitment to promoting science and technology in the country.
Rosaura Ruiz Gutierrez received her MSc, MSc and PhD degrees in Biology from the UNAM Faculty of Sciences and a postdoctoral degree from the University of California. She served as Mexico City’s education minister between 2018 and 2023, a period in which she worked with Sheinbaum, then head of the capital’s government.
The future secretary has received recognition for her work in academia, including two honorary doctorates awarded by the Autonomous University of Guerrero and the Latin American Institute for Educational Communication in 2024.
Ruiz Gutierrez highlighted the importance of a transversal approach in the decision-making process based on scientific knowledge and cooperation between all government ministries. His appointment also aims to rebuild the relationship between the government and the academic sectors, which was strained during the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Ruiz Gutierrez’s appointment also reflects the continuity of Sheinbaum’s team, as he is the first confirmed figure from the previous government to jump to the federal level. Other members of the DC team are expected to join the president-elect in her new administration effective October 1.
