The Presidential Council considered that former mayor Pablo Caram and former National Party deputy Valentina dos Santos, among other directors sentenced to prison, should financially compensate the mayor of Artigas for the damages they suffered.
Caram and dos Santos, as well as former Secretary-General Rodolfo Caram, were convicted in the case involving an investigation into $1 million in irregular overtime payments in the provincial government.
“The democratic system does not recognize, and our legislation condemns, any act of corruption in the improper use of public power or the exercise of public office,” a statement from the Presidential Council said.
The party, which is part of the government coalition, expects the same speed in “handling other cases that have been duly reported and are being examined by the Public Prosecution Service, referring to incidents with a criminal appearance that occurred in the past.”
The Colorado Party believes it is appropriate for Parliament to approve the bill on transparency and the mandatory nature of competitions when entering public service in municipalities, which has been blocked by the ruling National Party.
