With the participation of 21 students from 11 Mexican universities, one Colombian and one Salvadoran, the Scientific Research and Higher Education Center of Ensenada (Cicese) held the XXI Summer School of Optics and Optoelectronics, from July 29 to August 9.
As every year, EVOO 2024 offered an academic experience for students of disciplines such as physics, chemistry, mathematics and engineering, through classroom and laboratory practices and project development with the advice of specialists and students from the Department of Optics at Cicese.
“It was better than I expected. Everyone is very friendly, there is respect and coexistence, and the researchers have shown their ability and determination to teach,” said Joaquín Antonio Collato Pacheco, a student at the University of El Salvador and participant in EVOO 2024.
After the first week of classes and lab practice, Joaquin Antonio collaborated on the development of a fiber optic sensor for measuring the refractive index of liquids, which was advised by researcher Mikhail Shlyagin.
“The change in optics for me was dramatic,” said the Salvadoran student. “I didn’t have the opportunity to learn how lasers work in great detail, nor did I have knowledge of what evanescent fields and plasmons were, which were very new things to me.”
For Gerardo Barrera Flores, a student at the Autonomous University of Benimerita of Puebla (BUAP), who is pursuing a specialization in optics, the EVOO was an opportunity to access highly equipped laboratories.

Project topic
For his project, Gerardo chose to collaborate with researcher José Álvarez Borrego on digital image processing and pattern recognition, working on a database of human face images to identify features in real time.
On a personal level, the BUAP student said that what he liked most about the summer school was meeting students and teachers from other countries: “It was very enriching to be able to live with them on a cultural and experiential basis, and above all because of the quality of the treatment, and that is what I liked most here.”PREV0810_CICESE_CORT
