BEIJING, October 16, 2019 (Xinhua) – Chinese Vice President Han Zheng called for greater cooperation between China and Britain during his meeting with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair in Beijing today (Monday).

Han pointed out that China and the United Kingdom, as permanent members of the UN Security Council and major global economies, have defended, contributed to and promoted multilateralism, from which they have also benefited, as well as economic globalization and free trade.

In a context of increasing uncertainty and destabilizing factors on the international scene, greater cooperation between the two countries not only serves their own interests, but also benefits the entire world.

Han added that the two countries share a wide area for cooperation in sectors such as clean energy, biomedicine, finance, education and people-to-people exchanges, among others. The two sides should strengthen cooperation in international affairs, jointly address the challenges of climate change and biodiversity, and safeguard global peace and security.

Blair, also a former leader of the Labor Party, said the world faces many challenges today. China has an important international position and it is necessary for the Asian country and the United Kingdom to maintain friendly relations.

Blair said that the British side is willing to engage in frank dialogue with China and carry out constructive cooperation in a wide range of fields in order to jointly address global problems.
