Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Naing urged Washington to carefully and appropriately handle issues related to that region, stop official exchanges, and stop sending wrong signals to the separatist forces.
According to the spokesman, if the United States really wants to maintain peace and stability in the Strait, “it should clearly oppose Taiwan independence and support peaceful reunification.”
Mao pointed out that the one-China principle constitutes a general consensus accepted by the international community, while separatism is a “path doomed to failure.”
Taiwan is preparing for the island's leadership election scheduled for tomorrow, in which Lai Ching-ti, the current vice president and candidate of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, is one of the front-runners.
The Asian giant's Foreign Ministry recently described him as a separatist and troublemaker, capable of being drawn by his actions “towards the risk of military conflict.”
Beijing expressed its hope that the Taiwanese will see the serious harm of the DPP's policy, and the serious danger posed by Lai, and “make the right decision at the crossroads of cross-Strait relations.”
