According to a survey by the opinion firm Plaza Publica Cadem, 73 percent of those interviewed disagreed with Isapres exempting them from paying for the concept.
The private health system is made up of nine insurance companies, among which the largest are Banmédica, Cruz Blanca, Colmena Golden Cross, Cigna Salud, Vida Tres, and Aetna Salud.
It is estimated that together Isapres would have to return 700,000 affiliates close to $1.4 billion to collect rates higher than those specified in the 2019 individual factor table.
But so far, insurance companies refuse to abide by the court’s ruling and threaten bankruptcy, if the payment goes through.
When asked by Cadem about the possibility of Isapres going bankrupt, 50% of those interviewed considered it unlikely or not at all likely, while 29% said it was very possible.
In order to solve the crisis, the CEO entered a bill in the National Congress this month, called the Short Act, that would allow these private companies to pay off debts in full in an orderly manner and without a sudden impact on the system.
However, the Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, Alvaro Elizalde, denounced the existence of a political administration by representatives of insurance companies, which he said do not bear their own responsibility.
“This situation was not generated by the government. This position is the expression of the hundreds of thousands of judicial rulings, which point to the existence of excessive and unfounded charges by Isapres, “denounced Elizalde.
The minister warned that social security institutions must abide by judicial rulings because this is what the rule of law consists of.
Members of the National Union of University Health Professionals organized a demonstration in recent days in front of the headquarters of these companies to demand compliance with the justice decision and the return of unjustified fees to users.
