British court authorizes extradition of Macias, ex-wife of ex-governor Duarte

A British court has authorized the extradition of Mexico to Carime Macias, the ex-wife of Javier Duarte de Ochoa, governor of Veracruz state between 2010 and 2016, for public fraud, in connection with a transfer case with shell companies.

Duarte de Ochoa has been imprisoned in Mexico City’s Northern Prison since 2018, accused of organized crime and operations using illicitly sourced resources.

“The Department of State has informed that today, the District Judge and Chief Magistrate’s Court in London, UK, Paul Goldspring, has determined that it is appropriate to grant Mexico the international extradition of Mrs. Karim ‘N’, in accordance with the provisions of the State Department said in a statement.

Mexican authorities are obliging Macías Tupila to respond to accusations of an alleged fraud amounting to 112 million pesos ($5.9 million). Duarte de Ochoa’s ex-wife lived in the City of London for years, with her three children with the former governor of Veracruz.

Macías’ lawyers said they will appeal the decision, which will halt deliveries to Mexico for the time being, until a higher court determines the origin of the said legal resource, according to a report from the Animal Politico portal.

“In accordance with procedures established by law in the UK, the judge will send the file to the Home Secretary, so that she can, in accordance with her powers and authority, determine whether the requested international extradition is being sought,” he said. The State Department, in his statement. “Furthermore, it must be remembered that, in accordance with British legislation, Mrs. Karim ‘n’ can still file an appeal, which will also be pursued in accordance with the law.”
