British Home Secretary Soella Braverman said on Sunday that her government was “conducting negotiations” after the Taliban arrested three of its citizens in Afghanistan.
The media reported that those arrested were Kevin Cornwell, a doctor for a charity, a hotel manager for unidentified aid workers, and Miles Rutledge, a YouTube personality.
“The government is in negotiations and is working hard to ensure the safety of people,” Braverman told Sky News.
British NGO Presidium Network said on Twitter on Saturday that it was working “closely” with two of the families.
Britain’s Foreign Office said in a statement on Saturday that it was working to ensure consular access for British detainees and support for their families.
Scott Richards, who works with the Presidency Network, told Sky News they believed the detainees were in good health and had not been mistreated.
“We have no reason to believe that they suffered any negative treatment such as torture and they have told us that they are fine within what can be expected in the circumstances,” he said.
The Taliban regained power in Afghanistan in August 2021, and its policies, especially restricting the rights of women and girls, have sparked outrage ever since.
