Bird flu spreads to other provinces in Ecuador – Radio Rebelde

Keto- Ecuador’s Ministry of Environment today activated surveillance protocols in Manabi Province after an outbreak of bird flu was detected in the La Boca Mangrove area there. The state portfolio reported that they continue to monitor and take samples of the dead animals, while biologists, veterinarians and other technicians from the institution work on the final disposal of the birds.

The organization announced, through a statement, that inter-institutional task forces had been created to address the situation, in the presence of the Ministry of Health, Agrocalidad, municipal and provincial authorities, among other entities.

On November 11, an outbreak of this disease was also detected in the El Morro Manglares Wildlife Reserve, in the provinces of Guayas and Tungurahua and the Galapagos Islands.

In the El Morro Wildlife Sanctuary, six thousand birds were found dead all over the place, most of them those belonging to frigatebird colonies, the Environment Agency reported on Monday.

There lives a colony of 35,000 frigatebirds, a genus of large birds also known as Rapihorcadus, which is considered the largest in the South American and Pacific region.

Visiting frigate colonies is one of the main tourist activities in the Moro, so the Ministry has restricted access to this sector and ordered biosafety protocols for boats and personnel operating near the area.
