The Houston Dash and Kansas City Current, affiliates of the United States Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), joined the show of support for Spaniard Jenny Hermoso on Saturday because of the kiss that the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation gave her. Luis Rubiales after winning the World Cup.
The Dash and Current players took to the court wearing bracelets that read “With You Jenni”, which the San Diego Wave and Orlando Pride players had done the day before.
Alex Morgan, the legendary striker for the US national team and the Wave, was one of the football players who came out against it.
The Rubiales case had a great impact in the United States, as major American media devoted space on their front pages to what happened and its consequences.
The first reaction in women’s soccer came from Megan Rapinoe, a two-time world champion with the United States and current player for the NFL’s OL Reign.
“What happened made me think of all that we have to bear. Think of the weight that the Spanish team had to bear. Some of the players who stood up last year (when protesting against the treatment the coach and the Spanish Football Federation received) are still without money,” Rapinoe said in an interview. with him recently: “Maybe that’s the thing that triggered them, but you shouldn’t feel like it.”
“And there was another image that showed the deep level of misogyny and sexism in that union and in that guy (Rubiales) after the final whistle simply holding it between his legs. What backward world do we live in? On the biggest stage, in ‘One to Celebrate’ Jenny had to be physically harassed by that person,” continued football player OL Reign.
Rapinoe recalled Rubiales kissing Hermoso at the World Cup medals ceremony, where Spain made history by winning their first title in the final against England.
