Cuba. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermúdez participated in the 28th Ibero-American Summit, which took place on March 24-25 in the Dominican Republic, in which leaders from 22 countries participated.
When speaking, Díaz-Canel asked for movement towards a more just, supportive, and sustainable region, a path necessary to change the current unfair, irrational, and exclusive international order.
He stressed the damage caused by the years of hunger, as a multidimensional crisis occurred in the areas of health, climate, energy, food, economy and money, which affected everyone, especially developing countries.
“In 2021, 828 million people will suffer from hunger, an increase of 46 million over 2020 and an increase of 150 million over 2019. According to World Bank estimates, between 75 and 95 million people will live in extreme poverty at the end of 2022,” he specifies. .
He reiterated Cuba’s commitment to the presidency of the Group of 77 plus China, where cooperation and solidarity should prevail in the service of development, and expressed Cuba’s satisfaction as the venue for the 24th Conference of Ibero-American Water Directors, to be held. in November 2023.
One of the issues that drew attention was the blockade policy pursued by the US government against Cuba, which in 2019 witnessed a new escalation, with the aim of sowing frustration and resentment, with the aim of strangling the economy.
He gave an example of recent events in classic baseball, in the match between Cuba and the United States in Miami, where a shameful spectacle was presented, with the complicity of the city’s political authorities.
Diaz-Canel Bermúdez criticized the inclusion and continuity of Cuba in the list of state sponsors of terrorism by the United States, an unjustified measure and without any reason.
He thanked the Ibero-American countries for their statements against the US blockade and for demanding the exclusion of Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
He reiterated the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States’ declaration of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace, and its solidarity with Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia, which are vulnerable to destabilization attempts by Washington.
He supported Argentina’s legitimate right to the Malvinas Islands, South Sandwich, South Georgia and the surrounding maritime areas. He also spoke of self-determination and independence for Puerto Rico, commitment to peace processes in Colombia and the Haitian people, to whom he conveyed his solidarity.
Finally, the Cuban President thanked the Dominican Republic for the results achieved in leading the Ibero-American Community, and wished success to Ecuador, the host country for the next Ibero-American Summit in 2024.
He reiterated Cuba’s position in efforts to consolidate a more just, supportive and sustainable world, moving towards the development and prosperity of our peoples.
