During the honor allocated by the General Assembly, the President praised the leader’s efforts in defending preventive diplomacy, an approach that helped define Kuwait’s role in the Gulf region and around the world.
Guterres assured the forum that he “was a strong voice for regional and global stability, peace and multilateralism, the same values and goals that breathe life into this hall.”
The High Representative remembered the Sheikh as a generous humanitarian who helped alleviate human suffering and mobilize support for millions of people in need in the Middle East and the world.
He added that his personal commitment to collective solutions to achieve peace remains an inspiration.
As we honor the memory of Sheikh Nawaf today, let us also remember our commitments, in this Hall and in communities around the world, to the principles he defended, Guterres stressed.
For his part, the President of the 78th General Assembly, Dennis Francis, recalled His Highness the Prince as a guide to his country’s progress and prosperity.
He stressed that he maintained Kuwait’s long tradition of multilateral engagement on a range of issues, from mediating conflicts and leading humanitarian activities, to working across political divides to help promote sustainable development.
From Francis’s perspective, his vision of a better future and a more just and peaceful world fostered a strong commitment to lasting peace and stability throughout the Middle East.
He pointed out that this made Sheikh Nawaf a valuable partner and trusted friend to everyone, and we will continue to rely on his vision until now, as we strive to find a lasting solution to the crisis in Gaza.
