The former head of state, who is under house arrest, also involved former government minister Arturo Murillo during the trial for this reason for presenting “with media enthusiasm” the equipment, with some damaged.
Navagas, who expanded his testimony to the attorney general’s office during the corruption process, asserted his innocence, by ensuring that the appointment was prior to his becoming health minister.
He also reported through his lawyer, Osvaldo Zigara, that Anez and Morelo received this equipment knowing that it was illegal to purchase them, and that they were suffering from technical problems and “it was not respirators, but ventilators.”
Zigara noted that Navagas’ allegations against the two leaders are an extension of the testimony he requested during this trial.
“Ms Anez and Mr Arturo Murillo, due to a pioneering media desire, delivered the equipment as if it were making a profit, even though it was never said to have served as ICU ventilators,” said Zigara.
Anez has been imprisoned since March 15 in a preemptive manner in response to a trial in the wake of the November 2019 coup that ousted constitutional president Evo Morales from power.
