British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Wednesday that transgender women should not be able to compete in women’s sports.
“I don’t think biological men should compete in women’s events. This may be a controversial opinion, but it makes sense to me.Johnson told the media during a visit to the hospital.
“I also believe that women should have women-only spaces, whether in hospitals, prisons or locker rooms. If this puts me in conflict with anyone, we have to work on it. This does not mean that I do not support people who want to change their gender. It is important that we give these people the utmost love and support.”The Prime Minister added.
The comments come after transgender cyclist Emily Bridges was refused entry into the British National Championships this weekend, where she would have competed, among other stars, with five-time Olympic champion Laura Kenny.
The British Cycling Union has reported that the UCI has suspended its participation because these championships distribute points for international classification, and that in order to compete in the event, it needs permission to also participate in international competitions, which is in the works.
A British report on transgender participation in sports found that trans women retain distinct physiological advantages when competing in female categories, even if they suppress their testosterone levels.
