UK economic growth slows slightly in Q2

The UK economy grew by 0.6% between April and June, a slight slowdown compared to the first three months of the year.

The British economy grew by 0.6% between April and June, a slight slowdown compared with the first quarter of the year. This growth comes after a slight recession at the end of last year, benefiting from low inflation.

GDP rose by 0.7% in the first quarter of 2024, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONE). The data is in line with the period before the general election in July, when Labour took power with a pledge to stimulate the economy.

Rachel Reeves, the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, commented on the challenges facing the new government, highlighting the scale of the challenge inherited after a decade of low economic growth and a £22 billion deficit in the public finances. Reeves stressed that economic growth is a national priority and that they are taking difficult measures to boost the country’s economy.

Additionally, the data showed zero growth in June, due to a weak month in sectors such as healthcare and trade, although manufacturing saw an increase, according to Liz McKeown, director of economic statistics at One.
