Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Graduate Degree in Mathematical Sciences

Hermosillo, Sonora, August 16, 2024.- With a wide-ranging academic program, the University of Sonora, through the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences and the Department of Mathematics, celebrates today and tomorrow the twentieth anniversary of the Graduate Degree in Mathematical Sciences.

To start the activities, an emotional ceremony was held, presided over by the Rector María Rita Blancarte Martínez, who, in addition to congratulating the directors, teachers and students, gave recognition to both the members of the responsible committee and the external consultants of the project. After the speech of the directors, the teachers Agustín Brau Rojas, Carlos Robles Corbala, Fernando Luque Vázquez, Guadalupe Avila Godoy, Adolfo Minjarez Sosa, Jesús Mosino Raymundo, Joaquin Delgado Fernández, Martha Guzmán Partida, Oscar Vega Amaya, Rubén Flores Espinosa and Xavier Gomez Mont Avalos passed before the Presidency.

They understand the effort and commitment.

The President of the University praised the work done not only by the committee and the advisors, but also by the faculty members who made the graduate course in materials science an example.

“They are a very important model and a model with a second graduate degree,” he said.

“It is always exciting to see the advancement of the educational options offered by the University of Sonora, especially those dedicated to preparing students with the academic tools and quality that allow them to reach higher levels of excellence,” he said.

He stressed that the postgraduate degree in mathematical sciences has become a fundamental pillar in training outstanding mathematicians and has contributed significantly to the advancement of knowledge and research in this specialization, which is classified as one of the most important specializations in the country.

“I think we should realize that our alma mater, since the creation of the famous Graduate School, has given space to areas of knowledge that have no social significance, in practical terms as you know, but are an end in themselves,” he added.

He stressed the commitment of all those involved in teaching this specialization and their love for their field of knowledge, which led to the concerted efforts and walking together towards these twenty years of success.

The Head of the Mathematics Department, Francisco Espinosa Fierro, was responsible for welcoming and highlighting the quality of the mathematics teachers who have raised the level of the undergraduate and graduate academic program.

“They have accomplished the task of doing high-quality mathematics and are at an important stage of generational change and are committed to continuing to train new generations of mathematicians,” he said.

High quality training

For his part, Juan Pablo Soto Barreras, General Coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences, also emphasized the commitment of the faculty to train more than one hundred graduates of the postgraduate degree in mathematics with high quality in twenty years.

“Today, these are unified postgraduate courses across the northwest of the country,” he noted.

Likewise, the coordinator of postgraduate studies in mathematical sciences, Manuel Adrian Acuña Zegarra, referred to the trajectory of those who participated in the postgraduate course, both as students and as teachers, which has resulted in the emergence of a group of professionals with a high academic level and extensive knowledge of the contents, theories and methods of the main branches of mathematics.

“We are honored to have four permanent members of the Mexican Academy of Sciences,” he added.

Minjarez Sosa also pointed to the teachers’ participation during the pandemic with the state’s educational authorities.
