Ukraine and the United Kingdom held the first round of negotiations to conclude a bilateral agreement on the transition to a stronger and deeper partnership.
This was reported by the press service of the President’s Office, Ukrinform reports.
“The UK was the first to sign a security agreement with Ukraine and now it is the first to work on a historic document on a 100-year partnership. We hope that the negotiations will be successful so that this historic document will be signed soon,” said the head of the office, Andriy Yermak, who headed the Ukrainian delegation. “It is a matter of a decision by the President of Ukraine and the Prime Minister of the UK,” he said.
He thanked the British people, government and parliament for their assistance and leadership of Ukraine since the beginning of the large-scale invasion of the Russian Federation.
Yermak also stressed that Ukraine needs the UK’s support to restore just peace and prevent further aggression.
The office explained that the future long-term comprehensive agreement will be based on the provisions of the 2020 Agreement on Political Cooperation, Free Trade and Strategic Partnership and the 2024 Agreement on Security Cooperation between Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
“The new document should contain more ambitious goals for our cooperation. Our goal is to consolidate unprecedented provisions in all areas of common interest: from security to economy, from energy to culture and art,” stressed the deputy head of the bureau, Igor Zhovkva, who also took part in the negotiations.
As Ukrinform reported, on January 12, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak signed a security cooperation agreement in Kyiv.
