Education in Guatemala retakes captured headquarters in Alta Verapaz

Through a message on social networks, the head of the ministry, Annabella Geraka, explained that they took advantage of the country’s legal framework and put the rights of children, adolescents and young people first.

The official described the peaceful action as an achievement “made possible thanks to the support of President Bernardo Arévalo and successful coordination with the Attorney General’s Office (PGN).”

He also recognized the involvement of the Office of the Human Rights Ombudsman and conveyed to the entire educational community the importance that this administration attaches to full respect for the law and the restoration of supervision that is consistent with Mineduc.

Therefore, Jiraca confirmed that the director of the department, Anibal Alfonso Juarez, will remain in his position because he was selected through a competitive and transparent process and his performance will be evaluated like the rest of his colleagues.

He reiterated that this government body will not make its decisions under pressure or through undemocratic practices, calling on teachers not to be surprised by false, inaccurate and biased information.

The Minister called on the educational community to continue building a better system that meets the historical goals.

He reiterated his appreciation for the many expressions of support he received from the ancestral authorities, the members of the chapter and the people of Alta Verapaz.

The Guatemalan Education Workers Union occupied the headquarters of that administration, more than 200 kilometers from the capital, on July 17 in protest against the appointment of the new director.

PGN immediately issued an injunction to cease operations due to the illegal seizure, at Mineduc’s request, and a local court ordered the release of the property, within a period not exceeding 24 hours.

Users on digital platforms stressed that it is time for this union leadership to change and for people with vision and integrity to guide the real teaching profession that is not fit for a professional killer to plunder Guatemala.

Others believed that these old and sick leaders should be removed and that someone should be sought who supports the development of national education and not just their own interests.
