James, a four-time NBA champion and internationally recognized figure in his field, will lead the U.S. delegation to the event, which will take place on Friday, July 26, on the Seine River in the French capital.
In what will be his fourth Games, having previously won bronze at Athens 2004 and golds at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, James was selected as the flag bearer by the votes of the 592 athletes who make up the U.S. team.
The name of the player who will accompany him on this mission will be revealed on Tuesday.
“It is an incredible honor to represent the United States on this world stage, especially at a time when it can unite the entire world. For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything, not just to me, but to my family, all the kids in my city, my teammates, my fellow Olympians, and so many people across the country with high aspirations.
“Sports has the power to unite us all and I am proud to be a part of this important moment,” James said after hearing the news, according to a statement from Team USA.

The same statement includes remarks from Sarah Hirshland, CEO of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC): “Being selected by your teammates to carry the flag is a tremendous honor and a testament to LeBron’s passion for Team USA and their dedication to their sport. We will proudly watch as the flag bearers guide our athletes who are about to embark on an extraordinary journey together.”
LeBron will be the third NBA player, and first basketball-related name, to receive the honor after previously going to players Dawn Staley (2004) and Sue Bird (2020); the latter is the latest to be shared with baseball player Eddie Alvarez.
