Jamaicans are bracing for life-threatening winds and storm surges when Hurricane Beryl makes landfall in the country on Wednesday afternoon. The storm, now a Category 4, has left a trail of destruction across the Caribbean, killing at least six people. On the eve of the storm’s arrival, Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness called on wealthier nations to take stronger action against climate change.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness“Hurricane Beryl is the oldest Category 5 hurricane. [de la temporada de huracanes del Atlántico] recorded to date. This storm highlights the growing impact of climate change on global weather patterns, particularly in small island developing countries like Jamaica. While our carbon emissions are small, our region bears the brunt of the impacts of climate change. “This hurricane also highlights the urgent need for global climate action and targeted assistance to improve resilience to the growing threats of climate change.”

In the past 40 years, only two other hurricanes have made landfall in Jamaica.
