BRICS foreign ministers attend the enlarged session of the Council of Ministers

The bloc’s ten foreign ministers (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Iran) are participating in the meeting, in addition to about twenty representatives from other relevant countries.

The hosts stated that the attendees will analyze current issues on the global agenda, including in the context of joint efforts to promote true multilateralism in international relations.

It was reported that the titles will also discuss current regional issues, interaction between the BRICS countries within the framework of the association and on other platforms, as well as the prospects for multifaceted cooperation in the year of the Russian Federation’s presidency of the bloc in three years. Main areas: politics, security, economics, finance and human relations.

Likewise, they will evaluate key aspects of shaping a fairer global order and the role of countries of the Global South and East in these processes.

The Russian Foreign Ministry, which led the event, emphasized that the main task is to collectively search for answers to the common challenges faced by the international community to ensure equal security, sustainable development and long-term economic growth.

The previous day, the full members of the group issued a formal declaration at the initiative of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, outlining the main lines of work on it in the future and congratulating Russia on its leadership as head of the organization.

The ministers expressed their full support for Russia’s presidency of the BRICS in 2024 under the slogan “Strengthening multilateralism for equitable global development and security.” “They expressed their readiness to work together to ensure the success of the sixteenth summit in the Russian city of Kazan,” the text read.

The statement indicates that the heads of diplomacy of the member states reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership framework of the BRICS countries in three areas of cooperation: politics and security, economics and finance, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

According to the joint statement, the next meeting of the BRICS foreign ministers will be held in parallel with the United Nations General Assembly, and will be hosted by Brazil as the new president of the assembly in 2025.
