What is the Carina Nebula?
According to NASA, the Carina Nebula, also known as the Keel Nebula or NGC 3372, is an area of cosmic gas, vapors and dust. It is currently one of the regions of star birth and is located in the southern Carina constellation of the Milky Way Galaxy, 7,600 light-years away from Earth.
It was first observed by astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in 1751, who named it the “Great Nebula” because it was the largest and brightest yet seen.
Currently considered by astronomers to be one of the largest and most active nebulae in our galaxy, this surprising nebula harbors countless young stars within it and surrounds many open star clusters that are millions of years old.
Among the brightest stars protected by the Carinae Nebula are Eta Carinae and HD 93129A, two of the brightest, most massive stars in our galaxy.
NASA also explains that this nebula will disappear within a few million years, as it is completely devoured and evaporated by the inner and surrounding stars, but the exact year of its extinction is still unknown;
