The forum, which is being held at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), is the seventh organized by that United Nations organization, and is being held at a time when there are only six years left to fulfill the agenda that 193 countries have committed to setting on its agenda. On this occasion, participants will focus their attention on five of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals: Zero Hunger, Zero Poverty, Climate Action, Peace, Justice and strong institutions and alliances to achieve the Goals.
The event will be officially opened on Tuesday by the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed; Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, José Manuel Salazar-Zerenache, and other high authorities.
The Sustainable Development Goals Summit, held last year at the United Nations headquarters in New York, highlighted the urgent need to change course to achieve the goals.
The United Nations estimates that if the current trend continues, only 15% of commitments made worldwide will be achieved.
While ECLAC believes that 22 per cent will be met, progress in a positive direction has been made in 46 per cent but not as quickly as required, and the remaining 32 per cent will not be achieved.
The previous day, at a forum for girls, boys, adolescents and youth from Latin America and the Caribbean, held at the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, the role of new generations in the 2030 Agenda was considered.
The Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean raised the need to rely on youth for truly transformative and sustainable change that will ensure future prosperity.
