CAF has been awarded a UK contract to upgrade the signaling of the country's entire railway network, as part of a massive £4,000m (€4,677m) contract also involving the world's largest railway companies.
Network Rail, which is responsible for the infrastructure through which Britain's trains run, this week announced the winning companies of the two blocks between which the contract has been split. In addition to CAF (in a consortium with the Canadian company AtkinsRéalis), there are Alstom, Siemens, Hitachi and Thales-VolkerRail.
Beasain (Guipúzcoa) will participate in Batch 2, related to digital signaling and the use of the European Railway Control System (ETCS), with a joint budget of £3,000 million (€3,508 million), which will be distributed to all winning companies. The first part focuses on the rest of the budget.
The works included in these contracts will be implemented over the next ten years, during which the British government hopes to make a radical change in the railway sector, with the introduction of more modern equipment that provides greater efficiency for railway services.
The Basque company's signaling company (CAF Signalling) is already present in the UK, especially in equipment for various safety systems ERTMS (European Railway Traffic Management System) in trains.
