Ecuadorian ministers provide an account of the attack on the Mexican embassy

At this time, Chancellor Gabriella Sommerfeld appears before the Legislature's International Relations Committee; Minister of Government and Interior Monica Palencia; and Defense Chief Gian Carlo Loffredo.

During her intervention at that working table, Minister Monica Palencia described the impeachment request filed against her by the Citizens Revolution Movement (RC) group, after the government of President Daniel Noboa's invasion of the Mexican embassy, as persecution.

Palencia reiterated that she had an arrest warrant to execute and that was why she acted.

“I asked the Mexican embassy to extradite former Vice President Jorge Glas, and I asked former Ambassador Raquel Seror not to tarnish her country’s diplomatic mission by granting asylum to the former Vice President,” Palencia said.

The Oversight Committee, headed by Pamela Aguirre, a member of the Red Cross Society, also summoned the ministers to submit a report on the incident to the Mexican diplomatic headquarters.

But the officials decided to go to the International Relations Committee, headed by official Jonathan Parra, and the oversight session was not held.

The Ecuadorian National Police stormed the Mexican Embassy in Quito on the night of Friday, April 5, to arrest former Vice President Glass, who had requested political asylum.

The delegation's invasion sparked rejection from various countries and international organizations, which expressed their concern over what happened.

As a result of the events, Mexico severed its diplomatic relations with Ecuador because this was considered, in the eyes of its authorities, a violation of sovereignty, the right to asylum, and the right of all countries to obtain protection from their embassies.

The Ecuadorian executive insisted on justifying the operation before international organizations such as the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

Before this regional bloc, Chancellor Sommerfeld stated that for the Ecuadorian government, granting asylum to Glass is an “illegitimate act” because judicial proceedings are still pending against him, even though many consider him a political persecutor.
