World Book Day for Children and Young People sails the seas

Since 1967, on April 2 of each year, coinciding with the birth date of the famous Danish children's writer Hans Christian Andersen, the International Association of Books for Young People has been promoting the celebration of this anniversary.

The main goal is to awaken interest and love for books and reading in children and young people, and make it a habit in life.

It is a transcendent celebration of culture alongside World Book Day, which is celebrated on April 23 every year.

Each year, a representative writer and illustrator is selected to develop the message for all the world's children and design a poster that promotes the celebration in libraries and schools on a global scale.

In 2024, Japan will be the official sponsor under the slogan “Crossing the Seas on the Wings of Imagination,” and the person responsible for developing the message is writer Eiko Kadono, along with illustrator Nani Furiya.

On the poster the premise for new generations: “On wings, stories travel. I wish I could feel your heart flutter. »

The celebration is a lasting tribute to Hans Christian Andersen, considered one of the greatest authors of world literature, the author of dozens of fairy tales and more than 150 stories for children.

It also seeks to educate society about the importance of restoring and maintaining the habit of reading, and to directly involve young people in this endeavor, who unfortunately, according to studies, have lost this habit due to modernization, technological progress, and the digital world. .
