Associated British Ports (ABP) The first phase of development has begun ABP Solent Gateway at Marchwood Harbourconsisting of a site of 21 acres.
The development, supported by a £25 million investment for this first phase, will improve onshore and offshore facilities to enhance the Solent’s position as a leading gateway for trade, as well as increasing the port’s ability to support MoD operations.
The development on the site includes an ecological buffer zone on the edge of the harbor to enhance the visual impact on local residential areas and encourage wildlife on the site. Pedestrian and cyclist access roads to the port are also planned, linking the port to Marshwood Village.
Richard Parkinson, Marshwood Harbourmaster, He said: “This multi-million pound investment is fundamental to realizing Marshwood Port’s potential as a thriving port and to supporting our armed forces. It adds much needed additional port capacity in the Solent region. “The project has gone through a rigorous planning approval process and has been designed with significant features to benefit the local community and the environment.”
Alistair Welsh, ABP Regional Director for Solent Activities He added: “The Solent is the UK's leading gateway to the world and the UK's number one port for deep sea trade. “Developing this connectivity is fundamental to the success of the UK economy as a whole and in particular for the 115,000 jobs and £8 billion of value that supports regional activities. for ABP, including the ABP Solent Gateway.”
Marchwood is one of the first development sites within the Solent Freeport. Solent Freeport is a UK Government initiative to encourage investment in or near a port or airport, creating new sustainable businesses to increase regional prosperity.
