Cuban doctors living in the United States can reintegrate into their working lives through a program introduced this week by several organizations. It is suggested that doctors work in other countries so as not to lose their professional ties.
according to, Las Americas newspaper It will benefit more than 33,000 Cuban doctors living in the United States today. Doctors from other countries who are currently residing in that country will also join the initiative.
Julio Cesar Alfonso, founder and director of Solidarity Without Borders (SSF), commented that direct contacts are already underway with the governments of Latin American countries to begin the first work.
Among the countries that were chosen to start this project are: Haiti, Honduras, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Argentina and Peru.
A real alternative
“This is a real and tangible alternative to what the medical mission is,” said Alexi Lopez, a member of the Green Cross organization. The duration of this health cooperation can be up to about seven months, depending on the agreement concluded with each participating country.
The initiative was proposed as “a way to practice medicine without intermediaries.” In addition, it is a mechanism to promote the reintegration into their fields of practice for many physicians who cannot work in the United States.
