British officials say a ship off the coast of Yemen was slightly damaged by a shell
A ship off the coast of Yemen suffered “minor damage” after a projectile was fired at it, UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said early Tuesday.
In recent weeks, Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have intensified their attacks on ships in the Red Sea, which they say are carried out in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The UKMTO said on Tuesday it had received a report of an incident about 57 nautical miles west of the port city of Hodeidah in Yemen.
The ship's captain claimed that a “shell was fired at his ship” from the port side and passed over the deck, causing “slight damage to the bridge windows,” the UKMTO said in a statement.
He added that the captain “was aware of the presence of a small ship” on the left side of the ship.
“The ship and its crew are fine,” the statement said, adding that the ship was continuing its planned voyage.
British security company Ambrey told Reuters that the ship “suffered material damage due to a drone,” adding that the ship made evasive maneuvers and continued its journey.
Ambri said, according to Reuters, that there were no casualties.

The Houthis said in a statement on the X website that they carried out two military operations in the Red Sea, including attacking a British ship called “Morning Tide” with naval missiles.
The Houthis said they also attacked an American ship called the Star Nasya.
Ship tracking websites showed a Marshall Islands-flagged ship with the same name moving in the Gulf of Aden.
