SAN JOSE, January 24 (Prensa Latina) Costa Rica today highlighted the contribution of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) to building a more prosperous and equitable region, through cooperation with Latin American governments on economic development.
As well as improving people's standard of living and social development, as well as expanding and strengthening economic relations between countries and with other countries of the world.
This was stated by Deputy Minister of Multilateral Affairs, Ambassador Alejandro Solano.
In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), within the framework of the extraordinary meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc) held in Santiago, Chile.
A statement by the Costa Rican Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that the official explained that Costa Rica, from its experience as a former Chair of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean and currently as Vice-Chair, believes that the Committee provides a space for a distinct, legitimate and comprehensive political dialogue, as part of the United Nations system.
Likewise, he noted that the Commission was the appropriate forum to generate consensus and agreements on the region's influence on reshaping a global architecture that better responded to the goals of its creation and the needs of the peoples.
He also stressed that the new Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, Costa Rican José Manuel Salazar Zerenache, will continue to work on these lines for regional benefit.
Ambassador Solano also noted the challenge of “deepening the specific proposals and technical assistance provided by the Secretariat, as well as the cross-country cooperation that these proposals may generate, to address country-specific structural gaps and vulnerabilities, starting with a narrative of transformation and incrementalism rather than graduation.”
Costa Rica reaffirmed the importance of the dialogue it initiated, during its interim presidency for the period from 2020 to 2022, on the innovative agenda with financial institutions and development banks, as well as focusing on cooperation and investment opportunities in sectors with the greatest dynamism.
