As in much of Europe and the Western Hemisphere, national governments have initiated plans to gradually end social isolation caused by COVID-19.
In the case of the United Kingdom, the government led by Boris Johnson announced on Monday that measures include allowing the competitive practice of professional sports from June 1.
Naturally, this news resonated throughout much of the sporting world. In the case of football, the English Premier League announced that it plans to return between June 8 and 12, waiting for the teams to vote to determine how they will return to the competition.
In addition, Formula 1 is celebrating the news, which has not yet started its 2020 season and even plans to compete in a valid double at the Silverstone circuit. The decision could spearhead the return of national and international competitions in different categories and styles.
In the case of tennis, although Wimbledon has already been cancelled, the ATP and WTA will have the option of playing part of their reduced calendar in the British Isles and not necessarily on grass courts. In addition, several ITF World Tennis Tour tournaments can be held there, as long as international air and land traffic is permitted.
In this case, the British government ordered all foreigners arriving in the country to spend a mandatory 14 days of isolation.
The decision also includes the cricket league (which will return on July 1), the rugby league (which will return in the first week of July with 9 dates remaining to end the season), and others.
In all cases and in all sports, the condition is that competitions be held behind closed doors and with strict health controls.
