“Ørsted has made the final investment decision on the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Hornsea 3, which will have a capacity of 2.9 GW (roughly equivalent to three next-generation nuclear power plants) and will be completed by the end of 2027.” The Danish group said in a statement.
Located 160 kilometers off the Yorkshire coast, this wind farm should be able to provide electricity to more than 3.3 million homes.
Ørsted currently operates 12 offshore wind farms in the UK, including Hornsea 1 and 2.
Once the new turbines are operational, “the Ørsted site at Hornsea – which includes the Hornsea 1, 2 and 3 offshore wind farms – will have a combined capacity of more than 5 GW, making it the largest offshore wind site to be brought into service in the region.” The world,” she highlighted the group.
Wind energy faces difficulties despite European ambitions to double clean energy sources.
In Hornsea 3, the larger turbines and synergies with Hornsea 1 and 2 should translate into lower operating costs than seen so far, the Danish group said.
Ørsted also plans to build the Hornsea 4 wind farm in this area, which could have a capacity of up to 2.6 GW.
