Alongside the United States, the United Kingdom was one of the international leaders of the liberal democratic order built in the second half of the twentieth century. Historically, it has played a leading role in strengthening multilateral institutions such as United nationsOr the Atlantic Alliance or the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
It could not be otherwise, given that the British promoted the Industrial Revolution, pioneered parliamentarism as a form of government, and promoted liberalism as an economic model and political program.
In 2016, the result of the referendum that led to Brexit was not an expression of the majority of citizens who voted against continuing to belong to the European Union. Unin Europea. The onset of Brexit was also a warning sign, interpreted by more than one as a symptom of a possible shift towards an isolationist and protectionist dynamic in the UK’s relations with the world.
At the time, it was believed that the United Kingdom would join the group of countries openly hostile to the international free trade regime, based on the principles of multilateralism, complementarity and cooperation between nations. With pleasure, today we see firm steps in the opposite direction. One of them is the Trade Continuity Agreement between Mexico and the United Kingdom, which was approved unanimously on Tuesday in the plenary session of the Senate of the Republic.
It is an agreement that guarantees the continuity of free trade between the two countries and with it the continuation of the integration opportunities provided by this trade openness. In addition, it lays the foundations for the start of negotiations on a new, comprehensive, modern and ambitious bilateral treaty, at the height of the challenges of the twenty-first century.
Although it is a temporary arrangement, this agreement is a clear example of the commitment that the United Kingdom and Mexico maintain with a long-term open vision. In the same vein, the British government has officially announced its intention to join the The Comprehensive and Advanced Treaty of Trans-Pacific PartnershipTIPAT, of which our country is part.
We can only point out the good news behind the British actions: The UK’s exit from Europe does not mean an illiberal UK. Britain’s exit from the European Union represents the UK’s break from the regional orientation, but it did not represent a departure from its global message.
On the other hand, it is noteworthy that the Senate, amidst severe tensions, demonstrated its vision for the state; Political pluralism recognizes the importance of strengthening the rules-based global order.
