Regarding the investigation presented by the Public Prosecution last Thursday, the former first head of state in the modern democratic era of this country stressed that the democratic system should not be changed, nor should freedom of expression be violated.
Regarding the case called USAC Takeover: Political Looting, which led to the imprisonment of five people, the former president expressed his solidarity with the accused through the social network X and support for the winners of the past elections.
The detainees are the former candidate for deputy of the Similla Movement Party, Marcela Blanco, Javier de Leon, Dean Rodolfo Chang, engineer Alfredo Pepper from the Faculty of Engineering, and Eduardo Velasquez, former dean of the Faculty of Economics.
The new MP’s investigation implicated Arevalo and Herrera in protests at the University of San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC) from May 19, 2022 to June 9, 2023.
Students, professors, legislators and standard-bearers of Semela then demonstrated against the so-called fraudulent vote that imposed Walter Mazariegos as rector of the university.
Various local and international organizations condemned the persecution of USAC members and warned that it was another clear maneuver by the MP that jeopardizes the government transition process.
Political analysts agreed to describe the ongoing investigation as another apparent maneuver with the same goal as previous investigations: disrespecting the popular will expressed at the ballot box.
Raids carried out by a representative against the headquarters of the Supreme Electoral Court, including the use of force to seize voting records, caused the closure of more than 100 roads in this country at the beginning of last October.
That month Cerezo himself urged Guatemala’s current president, Alejandro Giammattei, to find a way out of the political crisis.
He conveyed that at that moment he was alone in the face of history, in the face of the demand in the streets for the resignation of Attorney General Consuelo Porras.
He revealed in a message that it is in his hands to ensure a return to rule, democracy and social peace.
He said: “It is time to listen to the people and all segments of society, who are exercising their legitimate right to peaceful protest, which we have not seen for a long time.”
The professional lawyer stressed that the matter is no longer about a political party, but rather about the present and future of the country, governance, peace and democracy.
