The presentation of the Pamplona Meetings 2024 / Iruñeko Topaketak 2024 held today, 14 November in Baluarte, Navarra, brings together an international biennale of culture, art and thought with a large central program that will be held in Pamplona from 3 to 13 October 2024.
Promoted by the Government of Navarra and organized by the Baluarte Foundation in collaboration with La Caixa Foundation, the Pamplona Meetings 2024/Irónico Tobatakec 2024, represented a milestone in the development of the first international biennale of culture, art and thought of our society on the basis of the positive influence and significant impact created by the Pamplona 72-22 Irónico Tobatakec Meetings.
In this way, what was born as a celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of an event that attracted great figures of the avant-garde to the capital of Navarre, was “a confirmation that there is a need among citizens for time and space for reflection and contemplation.” Moreover, doing so personally and collectively generated shared feelings and enthusiasm for knowledge and discussion, as explained by Rebeca Esnaola, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Government of Navarra.
This, together with the influence and good reception not only in Navarra, but also at the national and international level of the initiative, has led to the preservation of the Pamplona/Irónico Tupaquitac meetings and the promotion of some of the characteristics and actions of the 2022 edition, but as “an independent biennale that reflects the present and looks to the future” and “ It seeks to encourage meetings with leading thinkers, intellectuals and innovators as an incentive for dialogue and critical thinking.”
The central program of the Pamplona Meetings 2024/Erónico Tupacitac 2024 will be held from 3 to 13 October 2024 and will bring together key figures from the field of culture, arts and thought in the different fields in which the program is proposed. . It will have the Navarra Conference Center and the ballroom, Baluarte, as its main venue, although cultural and artistic activities will also be expanded to other spaces and public spaces and speakers will be able to dialogue with groups and citizens during their stay in our community.
Main lines of the central programme
The program is curated by thinker and writer Ramón Andrés and is organized into nine thematic blocks: the twenty-first century, the philosophy of positioning the self; In the Beginning Were the Hands (Reflections on Technology); Literature without turning a new page; The Trees We Have Left (thoughts about the environment); We all come from very far away; Feminist Mirror; Live from art; Cinema inside and music in all directions.
Among some of the issues that will be addressed are populism, society, nature and machines, the relationship between art and science, reforestation and the city or ecofeminism, among many others. As Commissioner Ramon Andres explained, “Each of them will be addressed by well-known and world-famous personalities.”
Some of the confirmed names, showing the commitment of the Biennale, are: Pascal Coignard, one of the most unique writers, creator of “The Last Kingdom”, a work in more than ten volumes, the result of a heretical spirit and a great writer who received the prestigious Goncourt and Formentor prizes; Turkish writer and poet Asli Erdogan, currently exiled in Germany, physicist, dancer and human rights activist, author of The Stone Building and Le Silence même n’est plus à toi; Neurobiologist and botanist Stefano Mancuso, famous in his specialty and tireless propagator for the conservation of nature and, in particular, plants and forests, author of books already considered classics in their field such as The Botanical Futurism, The Tree Tribe and Sensitivity and Intelligence in the Plant World; Monica Bello, Arts Director at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research), researches the links between art and technology and the relationship between artists and particle physicists; Joan Jonas, a pioneer in performance and video art, and a historical figure of international stature; Antoine D’Agata, film director and photographer of radical expression, correspondent, so to speak, of the world’s travails, member of the Magnum Agency and author of a book on Francis Bacon and, with Jonathan Littell, more recently of Un endroit inconvenient. ; Eva Lutz, an artist with a long career and international recognition, winner of the National Prize for Fine Arts; And the composers Georg Friedrich Haas and Lisa Lim, two creators who today constitute a true international reference for the boldness of their music and the richness of their catalog full of innovations and creativity that are destined to remain in the history of music of the 21st century.

With the aim of the meetings being generative of dialogue and critical thinking in a way that is sustainable over time and with an impact throughout Navarra, a program of coexistence with the Navarra community in the educational, artistic, scientific and cultural fields will be developed.
This program will take shape in actions before the Biennale, where the School of Encounters will be launched targeting students from educational centers in Navarre to work on the broad outlines of thought and culture that will be addressed at the Biennale through artistic workshops that integrate experimentation. Thought and cross-disciplinary, and through cooperation with UPNA to offer summer courses targeting students and citizens in general before the Biennale.
Likewise, meetings will be promoted between persons invited to the meetings, international leaders from different fields of thought, and specific sectors of Navarrese society in the educational, artistic, cultural and scientific fields during the days in which the Pamplona meetings are held. Memory of encounters
The call already launched has been integrated into the artistic memory of the 2022 Meetings with the aim of implementing newly created works based on the ideas and themes developed at the Pamplona 2024/Irónico Tupacitac 2024 Meetings.
Furthermore, after the meetings, a literary report will be prepared, which will take the form of a publication containing records and reflections on what happened there. Both initiatives will be developed throughout 2025.
Alliances
One of the goals of the Pamplona 2024/Erónico Tupacitac 2024 meetings is to continue weaving alliances with institutions and cultural agents in Navarra and at the national level.
