Progress of sectoral meetings for the transition of the government in Guatemala

Last Monday’s dispatches on public finances, on the one hand President Edwin Martínez and on the other hand the delegate of the elected Executive Jonathan Mincus, always continued to exchange strategic information.

In addition, the Central Bank participated, and a day ago Education Minister Claudia Ruiz presented programs that benefit students in the formal sector such as school food, medical insurance or school supplies.

In accordance with the 2022-2023 Transition Methodology, this week’s sectoral visits will also reach the portfolios of Agriculture, Livestock, Food, Economy and Social Development.

The first meeting was held on October 10 at the National Palace of Culture (the headquarters of the executive authority), where the current administration established a dedicated office for leadership change meetings.

The heads of the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, Rafael Rodriguez, and of Culture and Sports, Felipe Aguilar, as well as other officials, participated in the dialogue, along with teacher Maria Mercedes Arce, delegate of the Semela Party.

The country’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Manuel Eduardo Arrieta, received engineer Oscar Villagran to exchange basic information about the institution, the central organization revealed on the social network X.

Next came communications, infrastructure and housing, employment and social care, environment and natural resources, public health and social assistance, as well as external relations.

Teams appointed by the government and President-elect Bernardo Arévalo resumed the transition process on October 4, two days after blocking roads to demand the resignation of Attorney General Consuelo Porras.

The winner of the elections was forced to temporarily withdraw from the process on September 12, due to the MP’s interference in the vote, by raiding ballot boxes from the first round that took place on June 25.

While the Attorney General’s Office continued its maneuvers, Mayan indigenous authorities in the 48 cantons of the Totonicapán Department and social organizations promoted protests in defense of the popular will expressed at the ballot boxes.

The crowds of the ancestral leaders and the people, which celebrate the 24th consecutive day this Wednesday, are now concentrated on a sit-in in front of the MP’s headquarters.
