UK energy companies are supporting customers struggling to pay their bills

A number of UK energy companies, including British Gas, Octopus, EDF, E.ON and Scottish Power, are offering support to customers who are having difficulties paying their energy bills. Under Ofgem regulations, energy suppliers must provide various options to help those experiencing financial difficulties. These options include bill reductions, payment pauses, affordable payment plans, a complete review of payment plans, relief payments, and extended payment periods.

British Gas has helped more than 21,000 customers since 2021 with grants to pay off energy debts of up to £1,500. In addition, they offer additional financial advice services throughout the UK. Customers can also explore how to pay their bills in installments through a payment plan.

Octopus has allocated a £15 million customer support fund called Octo Assist, which consists of support programs aimed at providing additional help to those who need it. Aware of rising energy prices, Octopus realizes that many people will have trouble paying their bills during the winter.

EDF offers a Customer Support Fund that provides grants and assistance to vulnerable customers facing energy debt. This fund can help pay off electric or gas bill debt, as well as provide for essential appliances like refrigerators or stoves. However, applicants are advised to seek independent debt advice before applying for finance.

Scottish Power’s Hardship Fund offers grants of up to £750 to help pay energy bills. Clients may be eligible for support if they are receiving benefits such as income support, jobseekers allowance, pension credit or employment and support allowance. Low-income families or those facing special circumstances, such as reduced income due to illness, may also be eligible.
