President Joe Biden and the Democratic National Committee raised more than $71 million for his reelection in the three months ending Sept. 30, a strong indication that party donors are backing him ahead of a race that could include a rematch with Donald Trump in 2024.
Additionally, Biden’s campaign and party reported raising more than $72 million in the 10 weeks since the president made his official campaign announcement on April 25 and June 30, when the second quarter ended.
Both totals include donations to Biden’s campaign and a web of fundraising deals with national and state parties. Democrats had $91 million in cash as of the end of last month, the highest total ever for any Democrat at this point in an election cycle, the campaign said.
“The historic fundraising and funds available during this quarter reflect real enthusiasm and support,” Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said in a statement. “These numbers are a testament to one of our primary goals at the beginning of this campaign: to raise the resources necessary to run a strong campaign that will prevail in November 2024.”
Biden’s total did not exceed the number collected by the last Democratic president, Barack Obama, who raised $85.6 million with Democratic affiliates during the quarter from April to June 2011, when he launched his campaign for a second term.
Trump’s 2024 campaign announced last week that it had raised more than $45.5 million during the three months ending September 30, without benefiting the national Republican Party or party entities.
Trump has held an early lead over his rivals in the 2024 Republican primary and has seen strong fundraising despite four indictments that left him facing 91 criminal charges that hurt his campaign finances.
