Women in Italy have limited access to elected public office

A study conducted by the Openpolis Foundation, published on Monday on the digital media site Lente Pubblica, indicates that although for the first time in this European country, a woman, Giorgia Meloni, is heading the government as Prime Minister. Gender discrimination persists at lower levels.

Valeria Mancinelli, the current mayor of Ancona, the capital of the Marche region, is the only woman to hold a position at this level, and in municipal councils the female quota is acceptable only in positions stipulated by rules to achieve gender balance.

The law stipulates that in these latter cases, no gender can be represented by less than 40 percent, at least in areas with ordinary status, and in fact female councilors in district capitals represent 44.5 percentage points of the total.

Only in 32 of the 107 municipalities does the proportion of women appointed exceed 40 percent, and only in nine municipalities are they equal, holding half of the positions, but in another 56 municipalities the number of elected women reaches exactly 40 percent. Points, adds the source.

However, despite the legal provision mentioned above, 12 regional capitals do not comply with the minimum, including Catania, Agrigento, Enna, Messina, Ragusa, Siracusa, Trapani, Bolzano, Caltanissetta, Ascoli Piceno, Barletta and Palermo, adds the source.
