First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermúdez, arrived in the Angolan capital around 2:00 pm on Sunday (local time), to comply with an official visit that will last until August 22.

Regarding Cuba’s participation in the BRICS Summit, the President indicated in the aforementioned social network that this is the first time that this has happened, and “we also do this in our capacity as Chairman of the Group of 77 and China.” Diaz-Canel confirmed that it will be a space in which “we call for the promotion of effective coordination between the two consultation mechanisms to defend the demands of the global south.”

After traveling more than 11,000 kilometers separating Havana from Luanda, upon disembarking from the plane at the international airport “4 de Fevereiro”, with his partner Liz Cuesta Peraza, the Angolan Foreign Ministry greeted the president at the foot of the stairs. This is the first visit by Diaz-Canel to Angola as President of Cuba, as previously visited from the same position by Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Fidel Castro Ruz and General of the Army Raul Castro Ruz.

Relations between the two countries – which established diplomatic relations on November 15, 1975 – are marked by the legacy of friendship nurtured by leaders Fidel and Agostino Neto. Decisive was the Cuban participation in the overthrow of the apartheid forces that invaded Angola, an action that forever marked the bonds of brotherhood and solidarity between the two peoples.
