Owners of malnourished dogs are being charged

CHAPARAL, New Mexico — Animal cruelty charges have been filed following reports of two severely malnourished dogs, according to Doña Ana County officials. Authorities removed two dogs from a home shortly afterward in this city outside of El Paso.

On August 8, Dona Ana County animal control officers responded to a home on the 400 block on Prescott Anthony Drive. They then searched the Canines, named Sunflower (brunette) and Maui (black), before arresting them.

Sunflower and Maui both have health conditions that require ongoing care and are being taken care of by the veterinarians at Calista Animal Hospital. Both dogs are responding well and getting better every day, according to officials there.

“We appreciate the interest and support of our community members who share our dedication to protecting animals from harm,” said MaryLou Ward, director of the Office of Animal Control. “Everyone is encouraged to prevent animal cruelty and to practice responsible pet ownership.”

Calista Animal Hospital is accepting donations to continue the treatment of dogs.

Those wishing to donate may by phone call 575-525-1000. Donations can be made by credit card, cash, and check. They can also be dropped off at 1889 Calle de Niños in Las Cruces.

If you have knowledge or suspicion of animal abuse/neglect, you may contact the Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch Authority at 575-526-0795.
