Madrid July 2 (European press) –
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the world’s largest organization of Muslim countries, started an emergency session on Sunday to discuss the burning of the Holy Quran that took place this week in Sweden during a protest acknowledged by the Stockholm police.
The telematic meeting was launched from Jeddah at the request of the Saudi presidency, according to what was reported by the official news agency of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (SPA).
“The meeting is scheduled to discuss measures against these despicable acts to express a unified position against the desecration of the Holy Quran,” the organization said in a statement.
Although the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the arson, the Swedish government indicated that the protest was authorized in compliance with the right to freedom of expression, as it had done on previous occasions.
However, the Islamic world strongly protested the incident, which also took place and made things worse during Eid al-Adha.
The incident had serious consequences for Sweden in the diplomatic field. Thousands of protesters tried to storm the headquarters of the Swedish mission in Iraq, and on the same Sunday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry decided to postpone the arrival of its new ambassador to the Scandinavian country.
