A distinctive red jacket of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, adorned with a whimsical white lamb and one black sheep, will be offered for sale at Sotheby’s in September, during London Fashion Week. New York, at an estimated cost of between $50,000 and $80,000.
The woolen garments, which will go on sale for the first time, will headline the inaugural auction of the fashion icons, who will be offering them online from August 31 to September 14, during New York Fashion Week, and will also be shown at that. Same city from September 7th.
In June 1981, newly engaged Diana Spencer attended one of then-Prince Charles’ summer polo matches, wearing a red sweater with a whimsical black-and-white lamb trim by Warm & Wonderful.

“The jacket quickly swept the world, creating a great cultural and viral moment,” said the auctioneer of the moment, which caused an uproar among global media, fashion critics and the general public.
Just weeks after Lady Di’s first outing, the brand’s founding artists—Joanna Osborne and Sally Muir—received an official letter from Buckingham Palace explaining that Diana had damaged her beloved sheepskin jacket and asking for it to be repaired or replaced.
So a new jacket was sewn, after which the designers received additional correspondence from the palace: a letter of thanks from their private secretary, Oliver Everett.
As Princess of Wales, the jacket has been worn by William and Harry’s mother on several other occasions, always sparking a great deal of press comment and making the design incredibly popular in the UK and around the world.
What many wondered at the time was what Diana Spencer was so fascinated by with this tapestry: if she felt a connection to the lonely black sheep, in relation to her complex relationship with the royal family, or whether it could be interpreted as a reference to British farming history and country celebration.
A warm and lovely sheepskin jacket of the same design is now in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, while many have seen a replica of it in the fourth season of the Netflix series, “The Crown”, worn by actress Emma Corinne.
